With a little help our friends!

Last week Hannah came to stay for a few days to gain some experience as she wants to be a vet. Hannah is the 17 year old daughter of a family friend who i have known nearly all my life. Hannah was very excited about the possibility  of witnessing a birth but I did explain to Hannah that although cria were due, in the alpaca world births dont always happen on certain dates! We had already had two cria prior to Hannahs  arrival and were eagerly awaiting the next so everything was crossed. Hannah arrived on the the Wednesday evening.

Little Park Belle

After a slow start, Little Park Belle is coming on leaps and bounds. Born on the  1st July she was very snuffly and wheezy. After the initial checks and the placenta passing cleanly i left them bond and waited and watched for 5 hours while Belle sniffed around mum, seeming to realise she needed to feed but just not getting there. After trying in vain to get her to  latch on, I decided to express mums colostrum and bottle feed her to get the vital antibodies into her. Her mum, Little park Artemis was absolutely brilliant, letting me ‘milk’ her

One week old!

Little Park Sebastian is a week old and is a real character. As he doesnt have any other cria to play with yet he teases his ‘aunties’ to make them play. They of course are far too busy eating and ‘sunbathing’ to entertain such nonsense. Poor little chap. He is actually the tamest young male cria we’ve had, and seems to like my company and nuzzles me as if to say, ‘come on you’ll do’. I wish i could run as fast as him and be his playmate. Be patient Sebastian, there will soon be more buddies for you.

Little Park Sebastian

Little Park Sebastian, now 2 days old is settling in well. He doesnt leave his mums side (Harefield Dream maker). Dream is such a good mum, always aware of where he is. she takes him into the cool of the field shelter when its hot. She nudges him when hes been lying in the sun too long as if to say ‘come on little chap, time for a feed and then a cool off ‘. All he needs now is a play mate to run around with.

Shearing!

Well, shearing is done for another year. Very successful day, I only got spat at once, wee’d on twice, so not bad going! We are really pleased with the fleeces this year. I have selected the best of the bunch for showing, so finger crossed. Im sure the paca’s are feeling the benefit of having their coats off as the weather is warming up.

Beautiful day to watch and wait.

I have two females who are ready to ‘pop’. They like  to take their time. Im sure they do it on purpose so that if i stop watching to go and do other chores they will have their cria all by themselves without any help, as if to say “stop worrying, i can manage all by myself – see!” Lets hope so anyway. Most births are uncomplicated but I like to be on hand just in case. this is one of last years female cria, all grown up, well almost. 🙂
